The 1961 Company

The 1961 Company is a new collection for The U, the new University of Mobile Store spirit shop! This collection has been designed to celebrate the rich history of the University of Mobile by showcasing nostalgic designs from the 60s, 70s and 80s. Over the years we have seen a return of these vintage styles, characterized by clean illustrations coupled with retro typography. The 1961 Company takes you back to a time when the school was just in the beginning stages of becoming the institution we know today.

Mobile College was founded in 1961, which is what inspired the name of the collection. Later becoming the University of Mobile in 1993, the Christian university was designed to be a place where students could come learn while also discovering their calling. This core principle has not changed since the very beginning.

When we set out to design the pieces for this collection, we really wanted to do it justice and make sure the same amount of thought went into the designs as it did in building this institution. As creative director in the university’s Office for Marketing and Public Relations, I and fellow graphic designer Amanda Pritchard were inspired by yearbooks, historical articles and photos from the archives. Some of the designs we recreated and others we reimagined, taking elements from past designs and putting a modern twist on iconic favorites. The collection includes t-shirts, sweatshirts, pennants, stickers and more.

This new collection has something for everyone. Whether you are a graduate of Mobile College or the University of Mobile, we’ve designed something specifically for you. The 1961 Company can be found in person at The U in Bedsole Commons on the University of Mobile campus, or online at universityofmobilestore.com. We are constantly designing new pieces for the collection, so follow along as we take it back to 1961! Go Rams!
